What does the American Dream mean today?p/For Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat from Europe, it is the hope he can escape his past. For his cousin, Roman, it is the vision that together they can find fortune in Liberty City, gateway to the land of opportunity. As they slip into debt and are dragged into a criminal underworld by a series of shysters, thieves and sociopaths, they discover that the reality is very different from the dream in a city that worships money and status, and is heaven for those who have them and a living nightmare for those who don't.p/Beginning with the 1997 release of the original iGrand Theft Auto/i, the iGTA/i series has been one of the most prolific, controversial and down right entertaining franchises in video games history. This pedigree of success guarantees that the highly anticipated eleventh game in the series, iGrand Theft Auto IV/i, will garner at least as much attention if not more. p/table align="left" width="200" cellpadding="10" tr td img alt="'Grand Theft Auto IV' game logo" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/videogames/detail-page/gta4-logo.jpg" border=0 align=topbrbrsmallcenterbiReturn to Liberty City./td /tr /table table align=right width=250 cellpadding=10 tr td img alt="Niko's Dream as it should have been" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/videogames/detail-page/gta4_1_sm.jpg" border=0 align=topbrsmallcenterbiThe dream as Niko expected it.br/ View larger./i/b/center/small /td /tr tr td img alt="Niko and Roman" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/videogames/detail-page/gta4_2_sm.jpg" border=0 align=topbrsmallcenterbiThere's always a catch.br/View larger./i/b/small /td /tr tr td img alt="Niko with gun" src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/videogames/detail-page/gta4_3_sm.jpg" border=0 align=topbrsmallcenterbiBut some skills are international.br/View larger./i/bcenter/small/td/tr/tablep/bThe Plot/bbr/iGrand Theft Auto IV/i is a brand new adventure in the iGTA/i universe following the experiences of Nikolai "Niko" Bellic, a new immigrant from an undisclosed eastern European country whose troubled pa st and the persuasion of his cousin Roman have brought him to the fictional Liberty City. Unfortunately, Niko's search for the American Dream and a much needed fresh start, hits an immediate snag when the rags to riches story Roman spun to pique Niko's interest is exposed as not only a complete fabrication, but a ploy to enlist Niko's well-known skills as a tough guy against the ample list of enemies clamoring for Roman's debt-ridden blood.p/ Because Roman is the only person Niko knows in Liberty City he begrudgingly accepts his role as Roman's protector despite the deception. But as time goes on Niko comes into his own, and his experience on the wrong side of the tracks proves more valuable than he could have ever imagined as he fights for survival and later supremacy on the crime ridden streets of Liberty City.p/bGame Environments/bbr/Based on several of the boroughs of New York City and parts of New Jersey, Liberty City, familiar to players of previous games in the series, has been entirely redesigned for iGTA IV/i. Players can expect visible detail down to the weeds growing in the cracks in the sidewalk, cars and buildings of visibly different ages and a much greater level if verticality in the buildings and bridges that they are able to explore as Niko moves through the city streets. In addition, pedestrians in iGTA IV/i are much more realistic. No longer simply moving cardboard cutouts, these NPCs are intelligent, modern, human representations that laugh, cry, eat, drink, use cell phones and ATMs, and talking amongst themselves regardless of Niko's interaction with them.p/ bGameplay/bbr/ Historically iGTA/i games have focused heavily on mission-based play, requiring successful completion of fixed tasks in order for players to progress through the game, but this has changed to a great extent in iGTA IV/i. Players will experience an entirely new and exciting emphasis centered on the blending of on-mission and off-mission play, resulting not only in an increased sense of realism, but more interesting and unrestricted gameplay.p/ bFeatures/bbr/Aside from the car jacking and a detailed city environment here are the new features for iGTA IV/i: ul liImproved combat system - Now you can use cover and also a target lock system, which allows you to take out targets with greater ease and accuracy. Plus, you can engage in some hand-to-hand combat if you can't get your hands on a piece quick enough. liCell phone - Not just for basic phone calls anymore. Use your in-game cell phone to receive missions via SMS and snap photos. liFree time - In between missions you can take advantage of "me" time. There are gentleman's clubs, comedy clubs, bowling alleys, and bars, which all house unique activities. liTake a break from the storyline - A variety of side missions allow you to help run a car service, "borrow" cop cars, assassinate targets, help solve problems for those on the street, or take to the air with stunt jumps that are scattered all over the city. liControl your own fate - Throughout the game choice moments will arrive causing you to make a decision that will affect relationships and money. /ul p/bMultiplayer/b br/Give Niko a rest and create your own multiplayer "hero." iGTA/i has added multiplayer modes allowing you to take your creation out to play online in competitive, co-op, and free form modes. Competitive mode has you fighting against the cops, jacking cars, or racing to finish odd jobs. Co-op challenges you and your friends with various tasks including Hangman's NOOSE where you are responsible for escorting a wanted kingpin to a safe extraction point. Freeform lets you and 15 others lose on Liberty City. Use this mode to hit up the bar and play virtual darts versus each other or head out to the streets and set up your own drag races. If you can dream it, you can do it in Freeform mode.p/p/

4 out of 5 stars Technically superior, but not as fun as it could be,   August 24, 2008

I've played this game for over 20 hours at this point, its technically superior, the physics engine is fantastic. The overall story is very dramatic and is truly a tale of morality...Yet this game is missing an element of fun. br / br /The protagonist is aware that he's a despicable character and doesn't really care. A recurring theme is that he's only good at killing people and all he cares about is making money. How can I care about this character? br / br /Beyond that the game is pretty high maintenance having you play mini game after mini game. The most fun is to be able to hop into a car and get into some trouble, yet the police is extremely efficient and WILL get your number. There's very few pick up and play elements, and customization is pretty well non-existent letting you choose from maybe 20 separate looks which some are horrendous. Basically it leaves you with 5 decent looks of various colours which are pretty boring. br / br /The game's multiplayer is very good, and is in many ways the best part of the game. The story takes a long time to get good, and in the end there are very few true repercussions for your actions. Which would have made things more interesting. br / br /As it is, its a pretty generic story based game. As far as I'm concerned the replay value is pretty low as I don't feel pulled back to the game in any serious way the same way I was with previous installments. This, for me is very much a spiritual sequel to GTA III. I expect a much superior product in the next release

I know i'm jumping the gun on reviewing this game, cosnidering it won't be out for another week, but if even half of what i've read about this game is true, meaning the features and the game modes and the environment and the game engines and all that, then this will easily be the best game in a very, VERY long time!

5 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the 1-star   August 12, 2007

the Grand Theft Auto series has always offered a fun escape where you can do anything with no consequence. It really is enjoyable, and don't listen to those who tell you different. The series was getting repetitive, so Rockstar (developer) has promised a fresh take on a great series with br /GTA IV. However, it's date has been bumped from October, 2007 to br /Early 2008.
