1 out of 5 stars Such a disappointment!   June 15, 2010

So I purchased this game about a year ago when it first came out. I was so excited after waiting so long for it! I spent 70 dollars on the collectors edition and also picked up the 20 dollar game guide. First of all, I must say that the collectors edition is NOT worth it. Stickers and a USB drive?

I've played Sims 1 and 2 for quite a while. (with and without the expansion packs) I must say, both of those games are much better than this! I feel like Sims 3 was only created to suck money out of all sims lovers! The game comes with hardly any furniture/clothing/styles and seems pointless without expansions.

My computer had over the amount of suggested ram, however this game is so slow and etchy! Usually I can deal with it, however it become extremely frustrating when it crashes! (yes, it usually crashes within 20min.)

The Sims also seem to have a mind of their own in this version. It's extremely confusing keeping track of them and it makes you feel quite out of control over them. (and isn't that the point of the game?)

Overall, I suggest Sims 2 for gaming. Sims 3 is just a complete waste of money.

1 out of 5 stars Even worse than a DRM...   June 2, 2010

I decided two days ago to give Sims 3 a chance after discovering that it had not shipped with a system-destroying DRM. I loved the game and played straight through my first day of ownership with loads left to do (I shelled out $90+ for the base+expansion). I had to wait for a while when I first installed the game for "patches" to load and the launcher which allows you to access them had an issue because both the expansion and core game were installed, but it seemed to get past the tantrum and allowd me to play.

That was fine until I took yesterday off and decided to play tonight. After installing the latest "patch" the launcher now has locked me (and multiple other users on the forums) out of their games. The "advise" given on the forums is that the second expansion will ship with all patches up to date on the DVD. So their solution to being able to play nearly $100 worth of software is to shell out even more for the third expansion which will likely have just as many issues!?

I'd like to note that I was lucky here: I was able to pick up the expansion at $30 instead of the full price, so at least I wasn't robbed completely, but since you can't returned opened software I might as well have been.

Until and unless EA learns to treat their customers with respect I will not be purchasing another game from that company.

3 out of 5 stars Will keep you busy for a while but then meh.   May 15, 2010

I've been a big fan of the two previous games so I just had to buy it. If I hadn't got it through eBay at a significantly cheaper price I would've regretted my decision a lot.

The Sims 3 would be great for someone who's never tried TS1 or TS2. A lot of the stuff is regurgitated. Little bits of details have changed but basically they're the same stuff. At first I thought it was fun to (kinda) manage my sims at work with little modes like "business as usual" or "power working" or something like that but after a while it gets very linear. As usual, I don't have anything to do when all my sims are working.

I found their new CAS to be a complete fail. It reminds me a lot of the Elder Scrolls IV character creation mode. For those who play TESIV without face mods... yes, that's pretty much what we have here. And as far as I know EA is charging people for something they gave out for free for TS2: the bodyshop. But I guess after a lot of users started to charge other users for the so-called "premium" donation items, EA finally caught on and decided to get some of their profits.

But I should say some parts of TS3 have greatly improved upon its predecessors' shortcomings. You will get less loading screens (which is entailed by lagging if your graphic card is sub-par) and beautiful landscapes. Also you can customize virtually every item in the game with various patterns. On top of that the sims have more natural eye & body movements. I would've appreciated it more if creating decent looking sims wasn't so hard. Grids are more finely separated and you are no longer required to type in cheat codes to put things diagonally but I've found that sims still need much space to move around smoothly so you more or less end up putting things in the same way you did in TS2.

Get this game if you have a good computer and have never played any of the Sims games. The fans may be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Room for improvement, but overall a lot of fun!   February 24, 2010
BookChick (Simcoe, ON Canada)
As a fan of The Sims from the beginning, I was excited to play The Sims 3. I was impressed with the majority of the improvements. The gameplay is a lot of fun, and having mini-challenges pop up throughout the game depending on what your skills are adds a new level of fun to the game as well. For those not willing to use cheats the money often comes in fast and furious once your Sim has a job and works a little on his/her skills. I like that you can get promotions even if your skills are not at 100% of the requirement- it allows for quicker promotions and less frustration from working on the same skills constantly. The houses that you can move in to are beautiful and easily customizable, and this game is suitable for teens as well as adults. If you want to make the game a little harder, just add to the family and suddenly you'll be scrambling to keep up with everyone. I like that you can control how fast your Sim ages. Collecting things is also a fun addition to the game.

There are drawbacks. I miss the seasons that Sims 2 has (with expansion pack purchased) and I especially miss being able to send your Sims to University. I would love for an expansion pack to come out that incorporates both of these elements because TS3 takes up a LOT of hard drive space compared to other games and also requires newer components (make sure that you meet ALL minimum requirements before you buy this one- I had to upgrade my RAM before this would work for me). Also, when your Sims sleep it takes forever, and it is often boring to wait for them to wake up. There are not a ton of outfits and hairstyles, but if you're only playing one family at a time it shouldn't bother you too much. I also wish that there was more of a variety of jobs. The ones offered are fun, but get boring when you're controlling your sixth generation of Sims.

Despite the drawbacks I would still recommend this game. I'll take a break for a month or two from it, and then go back, start a new family, and start all over again. The fact that this game never ends, and is never exactly the same, makes it a worthy addition to your game collection.
