4 out of 5 stars Ontario - for you to discover   April 20, 2010
Suhail Zubaid AHMAD (Mississauga, ON, Canada)
I am glad that I bought this book from Amazon. I am 6 years late, but better late than never. My family and I were travelling down south every vacation and we thought that its about time we focused on our own neighbourhood, i.e. Ontario. This book is very informative and easy to read yet leaves the reader with enough curiosity to physically visit those attractions. The book mentions so many attractions that seem to be out of this world. If it were not for this book, I would not have found out about hiking and canoeing possibilities in Barren Canyon of Algonquin Provincial Park.

I am sure that the first challenge for readers would be to see how many of Ron Brown's top 100 unusual things to see in Ontario they have already covered. We checked it and were pleasantly surprised to see that we have been to 10 of those and each one of them deserves to be in the book.

The second challenge now is to plan our trips in such a way that we could optimally avail of other attractions. Good thing to find out from this book is that there are many attractions close to my residence. The disadvantage is that the attractions are not grouped in any particular regional manner. It would have been better if the writer had arranged the attractions counties / districts / regions wise.

As an Ontarian who travels to the USA a lot, this books makes me feel proud of the touristic heritage of my home province. I will definitely recommend this book to Ontarian and non-Ontarian tourists alike.

4 out of 5 stars Love, love, love this book   March 19, 2010

My husband and I found this book while we were still dating and fell in love with it. We've made it our goal to visit every place in this book. We've had so many fun, adventurous dates visiting the places in the book. And most of them are free. We can't wait for good weather to go on some more trips. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because the directions are often tricky to follow (though most places are market on road maps) and they are not grouped in any order. My husband went through the book and made a list of the places close together so that we could visit 2 or 3 in the same day as many are not far from each other or on the way to a further one. The background and history for each place is interesting. Makes a great coffee table book even if you don't visit the places.

4 out of 5 stars Great Travel Companion   July 6, 2009

I'm a bit of a history nut, so I found it hard to put this book down. There's everything from old historic churches, to unique grave stones (that took me 20 minutes to decipher!). If you like to travel around off-the-beaten-tracks, this book is an excellent companion. While there were some that I had stumbled across in my own travels, this book provided suppliamentary information about them that I thought was great. I only wish there were some more specifics about the location - GPS co-ordinates for example would have been a great idea.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for Ontarians   March 7, 2008

For Ontarians there is nothing like Ontario. I strongly encourage every citizen of Ontario to explore his or her own backyard first, before even dreaming of expensive and usually unfulfilling European or Caribbean vacations. There is so much to see and do right at home. Ron Brown's books are an outstanding contribution to accomplishing this task. This particular book is the best in his series.
Even non-Ontario residents will find this book extremely interesting.
I waited about 6 months to get this book through Amazon even though it is "in stock", before finally buying it at the local bookstore where it was available all along.

4 out of 5 stars So much to see in Ontario   January 5, 2008

From the Peterborough Petroglyphs, through the Niagara Escarpment Cedars which are hundreds of years old, to the Ouimet Canyon in Northern Ontario: Ron Brown has collated and written commentaries on a large number of interesting and intriguing sites in Ontario for residents in and travellers to the Province to visit. From natural treasures such as the Elora Gorge and Point Pelee to stately historical buildings such as Castle Kilbride and the Thomas Foster Memorial, the book describes places where generations of Ontarians have interacted with their natural environment and preserved and built on it.

Ontario is Canada's most populous Province and one gets a taste from Brown's book of just how varied and interesting a place it is.

An excellent acquisition, it forms part of a series of other, similar books by Brown on Ontario.
